BAR (FN M1930/M1918A2)

ENG: The first BAR model used by NRA soldiers was the Belgian FN M1930 model. Its magazine could hold 20 rounds of 7.92 Mauser ammunition, with a rate of fire of 550-650 rounds per minute. Thanks to its rapid barrel change and pistol grip, the weapon's accuracy and operation allowed for long fire support, combined with outstanding accuracy. 29,550 Belga BARs were added to the Nationalist forces between 1933 and 1939, and served with distinction in the elite German-trained divisions, as well as in the units of other divisions.

ENG: The M1918A2 model was first received by the Chinese Expeditionary Forces (X and Y Forces) during the Indian and Burma campaigns, along with other US equipment. The magazine held 20 rounds of 7.62x63mm (30-06) ammunition and had a rate of fire of 350-450 rounds per minute in Slow Fire mode and 550-650 rounds per minute in Rapid Fire mode. As with the US units within a platoon, the soldier in charge of the automatic weapon was assigned this weapon.

HOMETOWN WAR

ENG: Hometown War is a first person multiplayer shooter on Steam, which commemorating the battle happened at the Sihang Warehouse. Unfortunately, neither the uniforms nor some the weapons are not really accurate to the era, but if you are interested, you can buy it on the following link.

ENG: A Chinese friend of mine gave me some movie recommendations last week, and since the movie is based on real events, you will get a preview article along with the movie recommendation. Snipers(Ju Ji Shou) tells the story of a Chinese sniper who, at the age of 22, set a record that puts him among the top 10 snipers ever to have existed: he killed or wounded 214 American soldiers in 32 days, all with 435 shots.

Zhang Taofang és puskája/ Zhang Taofang and his rifle

1950 októberében a Kínai Önkéntes Hadsereg ( a továbbiakban: PVA azaz People's Volunteer Army) átlépte a Yalu folyót és Észak Korea megsegítésére sietett. A két hadsereg felszerelését tekintve a kínaiak jócskán elmaradtak az USA hadserege mögött, szinte egyáltalán nem vittek magukkal nehézfegyverzetet sem, viszont halált megvető bátorsággal és kiváló taktikai érzékkel harcoltak.

ENG: Zhang Taofang was born into a farming family in Xinghua, Jiangsu province, in 1931. Growing up in a war-torn era, he read no books at all. In March 1951, Zhang Taofang, 20, volunteered for the army, and after training he was sent straight to the Korean front. Half a year before, in June 1950, the Korean War broke out, and the front line was rapidly approaching the border between North Korea and China. The Americans repeatedly bombed Chinese cities along the border, and at the time there was great fear in China that the Americans might invade China. Whether this threat was real, or whether Mao was just looking for another self-justification for a war occasion (after reading the Frank Dikötter trilogy of books, I at least got that feeling, but I could still be wrong), is for everyone to decide, but in any case, in addition to my opinion above, I consider the deployment of the Chinese volunteer army to be justified in some respects. In October 1950, the Chinese Volunteer Army (PVA, People's Volunteer Army) crossed the Yalu River and rushed to the aid of North Korea. In terms of equipment, the Chinese were well behind the US Army, carrying almost no heavy weapons, but fighting with death-defying courage and excellent tactical sense.

ENG: Eight months after the volunteers went to war, the two opposing sides faced each other in five major battles: after the battle for the Changjin reservoir (as important as the battle itself is, the Chinese managed to make a terribly unpretentious, silly and unrealistic film about it, but more on that later....), a kind of standoff developed near the 38th parallel. This did not favour the PVA at all, who lacked artillery support, and the Americans took advantage of air superiority and superior firepower to put their troops down very close to the Chinese positions (according to the sources I have read, this was usually 200-300 metres). The American soldiers often went out of the bunkers to bask or bathe in the river, doing anything to provoke the Chinese. To counteract this, the Chinese announced Operation Cold Gun Movement to train and assemble as many professional marksmen as possible to take out small groups of enemies within a few hundred meters.

ENG: Operation Cold Gun Movement later proved to be a great success: between May 1952 and July 1953, the US Army suffered 52,000 dead and wounded, with the help of Chinese snipers. Thanks to a rifleman named Xu Shizhen (who shot 7 men with his rifle in one day, changing his position after each hit), the army was open to the new form of warfare and training began. This period saw the birth of legendary Chinese marksmen such as Zhang Taofang with 214 soldiers and 435 shots, Zou Xixiang with 203 soldiers and 206 shots and Pang Zilong, who originally served as a cook to the riflemen in his various positions. He wanted to learn the skills of marksmanship, and in 3 months he had finished with 54 American soldiers and officially became a hero. Another interesting facts of these riflemen was that they worked without scopes, only with iron sights (however many Chinese war dramas show that their army had such optics, this is wrong. Neither the Nationalist forces of the 1930's nor the Communist forces of the post-1949 era were in a financial position to provide their soldiers with such expensive military equipment.)

ENG: As a result of Zhang Taofeng's work, soldiers on the US side were downright terrified of him: if they detected a Chinese sniper working near them, they would immediately call for suppressing fire and mortar support in their sector in a panic). One captured US soldier said of him: "Your sniper is extremely professional. If he wants to hit someone in the head, he never get a shot in the neck accidentally!"

Zhang Taofeng 77 éves korában, 2007 októberében hunyt el, betegség következtében.

DP-28

ENG: DP 27/28, carrying 47 rounds of 7.62 x 54 mm cartridge and firing at 550–600 rpm, 56000 of this were sent to the KMT nationalists in 1938–1940, as well as some to the communist guerrillas throughout the war.

Type 36 gránát/gránáttartók

A Nagy Whampoai Melltartó (黃埔大奶罩)

A Type 36-os gránátból összesen 3 millió darab készült!

Az alábbi vízjellel ellátott képet egy TRA-s (Taiwanese Reenactment Association) barátunktól kaptuk, ezúton is köszönjük szépen a segítséget!

ENG: The Whampoa Big Bra

The following grenade pouches were used between 1946-1970 by the ROC army, which could hold 2x2 Type 36 or american MK2 grenades (36+11, the founding date of the Republic of China = 1947 was the date when these grenades started to produced). These were shorter than the german M24's, and was not too good quality, the Chinese soldiers preferred the american ones, after they were available. Arsenal 60, 70 and 90 were manufacturers of the Type 36 grenades, although type 36 grenade was not as good as the American grenades, it was still in production in Taiwan, responsible by Arsenal 44 in Taipei.

The Type 36 grenade was produced in a total number of 3 million pieces!

The following picture with the watermark was sent to us by our friend at the TRA (Taiwanese Reenactment Association), thank you for your kind help again!

Piros szélű NRA sapkajelvény/ NRA cap badge with red outer line

(A jelvény képe a netről van, nem a gyűjteményünk darabja/ The badge pic
is from the internet, it's not part of our collection)

ENG: A few days ago another version of cap badge came up for discussion, which has a red outer line, my friend Mihály in our team painted his one to this version. We got some help from a friend from Taiwan, because primarily, we thought this cap badge was used by the 18th Group Army's communist soldiers. Regarding the informations we got, we think it was possible that the communist army got from these caps as a trophy after victorius battles over nationalists. The period and the usage of this by communist armies should be used between 1945-1949, in the 2nd phase of the Chinese Civil War, however we don't have photographic evidence from this. If you want to display this cap badge in your impressions, we suggest you to do in the 2nd phase of Civil War period or the 2 other options below:

Az általunk készített sapkajelvény/The red outer lined cap badge made by us

ENG: 1. The NRA used the blue-white badge between 1928 and 1945, which got a red outer line in 1945, symbolizing the victory over Japan and the sacrificed blood (red earth) by China.
2. Between 1941 and 1945 the puppet government in Nanjing, also issued the red outer line cap badges to it's troops, the Wang Jingwei Army. After 1945, when the NRA occupied Nanjing again, tens of thousands of this cap acquired by them, and issued immediately to the nationalist forces.

A Wang Jingwei Army katonái a piros szélű sapkajelvénnyel
Soldiers of the Wang Jingwei Army with the red outer lined cap badge

ENG: After 1950, the red outer line cap badge was banned because it reminded the soldiers of loosing the civil war (the communist armies were surrounded and blockaded the Chinese cities, which fell one by one, thanks to the NRA's crap military thinking and maneuvers).
